Bigg Design worked with Lightfolio to provide conceptual and detailed lighting design for the new Stockingfield Junction bridge, associated park and walkways.

The landmark pedestrian and cycle bridge links the communities of Ruchill, Gilshochill and Maryhill in the north of Glasgow for the first time since 1790 and represents a significant active travel improvement on the Forth & Clyde Canal.

Designed by engineering firm Jacobs, the gracefully curved tri-directional bridge joins the communities with a single link suspended by a large spire and observation deck.

Cyclists and walkers previously had to use the narrow pavement of a busy and unlit road tunnel under the canal in order to move between the three communities. The new bridge enables users to safely cross the junction on the towpath of the Forth & Clyde Canal, opening up access to the wider National Cycle Network and the city centre.

The bridge creates a new landmark for the area with the spire of the suspension bridge towering some 100 feet over the waterway and a new park area providing space to enjoy the views and surrounding nature.

The spire, bridge and pathways are all lit by a state-of-the-art LED lighting system designed by Lightfolio and Bigg Design.

The lighting scheme allows for ultimate flexibility, creating a well-lit, welcoming network of paths and walkways, paired with crisp white lighting of the bridge structure, all the way to a full colour change and animated rendition of the crossing t

The lighting scheme allows for ultimate flexibility, creating a well-lit, welcoming network of paths and walkways, paired with crisp white lighting of the bridge structure, all the way to a full colour change and animated rendition of the crossing that can be adapted for special events and calendar days. The state of the art LEDs create a low-energy solution that can also be dimmed accordingly for further energy savings.

Custom cases and foundations were also created to house the lights, especially around the base of the spire, where this had to be carefully designed so as to not interfere with the structure, whilst allowing the lights to wash the height of it and shield users from the glare of the bright lights.
