The design is a celebration of colour, rhythm and harmony and features bold abstract motifs evocative of the hills and rivers of the Perthshire countryside contrasted with the architecture of the city. The stand-out feature of the lighting design focuses around the magnificent glazed façade of the north face of the building. A vast array of LEDs embedded within the windows forms a network of individually addressable lights that will be used to create beautiful animations across the building (see video). These colossal sculptures stand at 30m tall and form a gateway to the Forth and Clyde canal at Falkirk and the new canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project, that we also worked on. Assisting Lightfolio with their lighting design, we were tasked with designing a solution to a particular problem. Due to the difficult site constraints and the large number and size of lights required to light the magnificent sculptures, there was nowhere available to place the lights as above ground they would form trip hazards for the busy visitor attraction. In order to reveal the sculpture as elegantly as possible, the light units also had to be in very specific locations. We therefore designed innovative ‘light pits’ built from stainless steel and specialist walk-over glass with an optically clear texture to avoid them becoming slippery when wet. After an extensive £10m renovation project, the lighting was the jewel in the crown and not only brings this impressive building to life but also creates a wonderful gateway to the foot of Perth High Street. Overall, a respectful approach was taken for illuminating this stately building with the use of discreet warm white lighting carefully placed to reveal architectural details to their full. The specification of high-efficiency LEDs with excellent colour rendering capabilities has brought out the most natural stone colouration with minimal energy use. North Lanarkshire Council approached Bigg Design looking to update an existing yet ageing tree lighting scheme. The old lights were starting to fail and offered only a mix of static white and blue lights. The landmark pedestrian and cycle bridge links the communities of Ruchill, Gilshochill and Maryhill in the north of Glasgow for the first time since 1790 and represents a significant active travel improvement on the Forth & Clyde Canal. Designed by engineering firm Jacobs, the gracefully curved tri-directional bridge joins the communities with a single link suspended by a large spire and observation deck. Cyclists and walkers previously had to use the narrow pavement of a busy and unlit road tunnel under the canal in order to move between the three communities. The new bridge enables users to safely cross the junction on the towpath of the Forth & Clyde Canal, opening up access to the wider National Cycle Network and the city centre. The bridge creates a new landmark for the area with the spire of the suspension bridge towering some 100 feet over the waterway and a new park area providing space to enjoy the views and surrounding nature. As part of these exciting developments, Bigg Design and Fun Makes Good are transforming Bradford’s main bus and rail interchange with super-scale, multi-surface artworks that will create an exciting, welcoming gateway to the city. Inspired by the vibrant colours of Bradford District, this series of abstract artworks celebrates the city and its surrounding landscapes, towns and villages. From heather-clad moors and stone cobbled streets to the radiant glow of city lights; from stunning architecture and a thriving cultural scene to bustling markets and aromatic kitchens; from tranquil parks, woodlands and canal-side walks to lively festivals, sports and rich heritage - each hue reflects the unique elements of the region, weaving them together in a dynamic visual narrative to capture the diversity and beauty of Bradford District in every shade. Alongside a project team of Fereday Pollard (landscape architects), Balfour Beatty (main contractor) and Butterfield (signage contractor), working for West Yorkshire Council Authority, City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council and Bradford 2025, Bigg Design and Fun Makes Good have created over 1,500m2 of artwork, enhancing the Interchange with vibrant, multi-dimensional spaces that offer a range of unique visitor experiences. Key features include a newly designed plaza area with a colourful perimeter of graphic hoarding, welcoming signage, and glazing treatments; a 100-meter-long art walkway and underpass; as well as several internal spaces featuring bold artwork walls, mirrored glazing, colourful columns, way-finding signage, and stained-glass-style glazing wraps that bathe the atrium in a spectrum of light. Featuring a series of sculptural columns that reflect key elements of Woodside’s proud heritage and natural surroundings - the intricate metal sculptures and colourful decorated timber posts combine with bespoke concrete seating, and a sea-to-shore themed paving and native planting design that represents the surrounding landscape. Working with community groups and local school children, the project transforms three road sites in an effort to brighten up people’s journeys and make walking and cycling around Leith safer and more appealing. The largest site, John’s Place takes an ex-road that has been reclaimed as part of the Low Traffic Neighbourhood scheme and decorates it with a sea-to-shore theme that nods to some of Leith’s rich history and the adjacent community allotments and urban croft Earth in Common.
